Terms of Service
Current as at 1 October 2026. Mabel is a new product and these terms will grow as it does: we’ll update the date above, and email you before anything material changes. They aren’t a substitute for your own legal advice. If anything here is unclear, just ask us. We’d rather explain it than have you guess.
These terms are an agreement between you and Mabel Software Pty Ltd (ABN 61 701 726 972), the operator of Mabel. By creating an account you agree to them. If you don’t agree, please don’t use Mabel.
1. What Mabel is
Mabel is cloud accounting software for individuals, sole traders, non-trading companies and trusts. It records transactions, produces financial reports and totals GST for activity statements. It includes an AI bookkeeper, “Ask Mabel”.
Mabel deliberately does not handle payroll, superannuation, live bank feeds, inventory, projects or multiple currencies. If you need those, Mabel is the wrong tool for you.
Not every feature is on every plan. Our pricing page sets out what each plan includes.
2. Mabel is not your accountant
Mabel is software, not advice. Nothing Mabel produces, including anything Ask Mabel says, is accounting, tax, legal or financial advice, and we are not your registered tax agent or BAS agent.
You are responsible for the accuracy of your records and for everything you lodge with the ATO or anyone else. Check Mabel’s figures before you rely on them, and get professional advice where it matters.
3. Ask Mabel can be wrong
Ask Mabel is powered by a large language model. Like all such systems she can make mistakes: mis-code a transaction, misread a statement, or state something confidently and incorrectly. She can also take actions in your file at your instruction: posting journals, reconciling statement lines, creating accounts.
Review her work. You are responsible for anything she does in your file. Everything she posts appears in the interface alongside the rest of your records, and most of what she does can be undone there. Not all of it can: merging two accounts, for example, cannot be reversed. Treat her work as you would your own, and check it.
4. Your account
- You must give accurate details and keep your password secure.
- You are responsible for everything that happens under your account.
- You must be at least 16 years old.
- Tell us promptly if you think your account has been compromised.
5. Plans, billing and renewal
The free plan. Your first entity is free, with 2GB of file attachments, shown on our pricing page. Every account also gets free Ask Mabel credits each month (see Ask Mabel credits below). Connecting your own Claude account uses no credits, because those messages are billed to your own Claude subscription rather than to us. No card is needed and there is no trial clock.
Mabel Pro is bought for one entity at a time. You choose monthly or yearly billing, at the price shown on the pricing page. Each entity you put on Pro is a separate subscription with its own billing date, so an account with three paid entities holds three subscriptions and gets a receipt for each. Prices are in Australian dollars and include GST.
There is no introductory price. The yearly price is simply lower than twelve months at the monthly price. It is not a discount that runs out, and it does not change when your subscription renews.
Renewal. A paid subscription renews automatically, each month or each year according to what you chose, until you cancel it. We will email you before each renewal, telling you what you will be charged and when. You can cancel at any time from your account, and you keep what you have paid for until the end of that period.
Adding and removing entities. A subscription starts on the day you buy it, so there is no pro rata charge for part of a period. Cancelling one entity’s subscription does not affect any other. We don’t refund part of a period already paid for.
A second entity starts read-only. Your free entity is active from the moment you create it. An entity beyond what your plan covers is created but starts read-only, and becomes active as soon as it is paid for.
Ask Mabel credits. Ask Mabel is paid for in credits. Each reply uses credits for the AI work it took: what it cost us, at the day’s exchange rate, divided by 8.5 Australian cents, rounded to the nearest whole credit, and at least one credit for any reply that cost something. Each reply shows what it used. A message that fails and changes nothing is free. A reply is charged for the work done if it finishes, if it is answering one of Mabel’s questions, if you stop it partway, if it stops because credits ran out, or if it is stopped after waiting three days for you.
Who pays. Each entity has one owner, who pays for all Ask Mabel use in it, whoever is chatting, members included, and every run of a scheduled task on it, whoever made the task. Members see what each reply cost, but not the owner’s balance. When an entity is transferred, its new owner pays from then on.
Skills and scheduled tasks (Beta). On Lite and up, members of an entity can teach Mabel skills and set tasks to run on a schedule with nobody watching. A scheduled run follows the task’s skill and instructions as written, acts on the books with the permissions of the member who made the task (or of the entity’s owner, once that member has left the entity), and its changes are recorded as Mabel’s. A task set to skip approvals runs every step without pausing, including steps that remove or reverse records; a task set to manually approve parks those steps for a member’s approval, and a parked step nobody approves within 7 days lapses. Each run is recapped by email to the task’s creator and the members ticked on the task; a task can be set to recap only the runs that need a person, or not at all, and a member may unsubscribe from a task’s recaps. A run due when the owner has no credits does not run. Skills and scheduled tasks are provided in beta and may change; the recap, the chat of each run and the audit log are your record of what each run did.
Free credits. Every account gets free credits each month, the number shown on our pricing page, used across every entity it owns. Your month runs from the day of the month you signed up: sign up on the 23rd and your month runs to the 22nd of the next month, then starts again. If you signed up on the 29th, 30th or 31st, a shorter month starts again on its last day. Free credits apply to that month only and do not carry into the next one.
Credit packs. A credit pack is its own monthly subscription, separate from any plan: you can buy one whatever plan your entities are on, and it keeps running if you cancel a plan. You can hold one pack at a time. Its credits are added each month when that month’s payment goes through, and they roll over from month to month for as long as the pack is running. You can move to a bigger pack at any time: we charge the difference between the two monthly prices straight away and add the extra credits straight away, and from your next renewal you pay the bigger pack’s price. If you moved down a size earlier in the same month, the difference is worked out from the bigger pack you had already paid for. A move to a smaller pack takes effect at your next renewal, with nothing charged or refunded. If you cancel a pack, any credits bought under it are forfeited at the end of that billing period, so use them before then.
Top-ups. A top-up is a one-off purchase of credits, charged when you buy it. Its credits last 12 months from the day it is paid for, and are forfeited after that.
The order credits are used in. Free credits first, then your credit pack’s, then top-ups, the oldest first.
Running out. A message needs at least one credit to start. If the credits run out while Mabel is working, she finishes the step she is on, stops, and says what is done and what is left. The small amount that last step goes over is on us: a balance never goes below zero.
Auto-reload. You can have Mabel buy a top-up for you when your credits drop to a level you choose, up to a monthly limit you choose. By turning auto-reload on, you authorise us to charge your saved card the price of the top-up you chose, as shown when you turned it on, each time your credits drop to that level, up to that limit in each of your months, until you turn it off. If a charge is declined, your bank asks you to approve it, or we can’t set the payment up, auto-reload pauses and we email you; it starts again when you buy credits yourself or save the settings again. While auto-reload is on, credits you buy yourself make the card you paid with the one it charges. A payment waiting for your approval that isn’t approved within 7 days is cancelled, and nothing is charged for it; so is one still waiting when you buy credits yourself, save the settings again or close your account.
Credits are not money. Credits can’t be exchanged for cash or moved to another account, and they aren’t refundable, except where the Australian Consumer Law requires. Closing your account forfeits any credits on it.
If a payment fails. We’ll try again and let you know. If a subscription stays unpaid for 15 days, the entity it pays for becomes read-only. You can still open it, read it, export everything in it and ask Mabel questions about it, but you can’t add or change records until payment succeeds. You always keep at least one entity active. Where an account is over what its plan covers, entities whose own subscription has lapsed become read-only first, then the most recently created ones. This is worked out automatically rather than chosen by you.
We don’t delete your books over an unpaid invoice. Your records stay in your account, readable and exportable, and are only ever deleted as described in section 7 and our Privacy Policy.
Transferring a subscription. A subscription can be transferred to another Mabel account holder, who has to accept it; a request expires after seven days if they don’t. Until it is accepted nothing changes, and the original subscriber goes on being billed as normal. On acceptance the remaining paid period transfers with the subscription, so the new subscriber is not charged until that period ends, and nothing is refunded to the person transferring. They keep access to the entity as a member rather than the owner.
Storage. The free plan includes 2GB of file attachments. Paid plans are not held to a fixed figure, but they are subject to fair use: the storage is there for the records of the entities you keep in Mabel, and we may get in touch if an account is storing far more than a set of books would account for. Individual files are also subject to a size limit.
Price changes. We may change our prices. We will give you at least 30 days’ notice by email before a change affects one of your renewals, so you can cancel before it takes effect.
Refunds. We don’t generally refund part-periods or credits, but nothing here limits your rights under the Australian Consumer Law, including a refund where the service is faulty or not as described. If something has gone wrong, tell us and we’ll sort it out.
6. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use Mabel to break the law, or to create false or misleading records;
- upload material you don’t have the right to upload;
- attempt to access another user’s data;
- probe, scrape, overload or reverse engineer the service;
- resell Mabel or offer it as your own service without our written agreement.
7. Your data
Your records remain yours. We claim no ownership of them. We handle them as described in our Privacy Policy, and you can export or delete them at any time. You grant us only the licence needed to store and process your data in order to run the service for you.
8. Availability
We aim to keep Mabel available and working, but we don’t offer an uptime guarantee, on the free plan or a paid one. We may change, suspend or discontinue features. If we ever shut Mabel down, we will give you at least 60 days’ notice and time to export your data.
9. Ending the agreement
You can close your account at any time. We may suspend or close an account that breaches these terms, or that is being used in a way that risks harm to other users or to us. Where circumstances allow, we will tell you first.
10. Liability
Nothing in these terms excludes any rights you have under the Australian Consumer Law that cannot lawfully be excluded. Subject to that:
- Mabel is provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind;
- we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, lost profits, lost data, or any penalty, interest or additional tax arising from figures you lodged without checking them;
- where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to resupplying the service or, at our option, refunding what you have paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or AUD $100 if we have charged you nothing.
11. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. We will update the date at the top and, for material changes, email you before they take effect. Continuing to use Mabel after that means you accept the new terms.
12. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of South Australia, and the courts of that state have non-exclusive jurisdiction.
